A Cherry Icon Cup of water held in a lap in a sunny garden

How an Icon Cup is made

Every step made by hand, with warmth you can feel on your table.

  1. A glassmaker trims glowing molten glass on a blowpipe with shears

    A gather of hot glass

Icon Cups are soda-lime glass. The raw materials are melted into glowing molten glass, then gathered by hand on a long iron rod.

  2. Red glass icons fused onto the hot gather, beside rows of icons kept warm by a flame

    02 / 05

    Applying the icons

The glass icons are kept almost as hot as the molten glass, so they won't crack. The hot gather is rolled over them, and they fuse right in.

  3. Molten glass being blown into a water-cooled mould, surrounded by steam

    Blown into shape

It's blown by hand into a water-cooled mould, filling the corner with steam, and comes out cup-shaped and still glowing.

  4. A small hook stretching the still-narrow opening of a glowing Icon Cup into its rim

    Back to the fire

Back in the heat to stay soft, a small hook opens up the rim, which is then smoothed and rounded. The thick walls give it that chunky, weighty feel.

    From their hands to yours

It's slow, skilled work in a fiercely hot workshop, and every cup passes through many careful hands. Finished cups are cooled slowly, then travel to Auckland, where we pack every order by hand.

Questions

Will the icons or the white rim ever come off?

No. Both are glass, fused in while the cup is hot. It's harder to make than a painted rim, but it won't peel, fade or wash off.

Why does every cup look slightly different?

Each one is blown by hand, so a slight lean or a tiny bubble is normal. No two are exactly alike.

Why are Icon Cups for cold drinks only?

Soda-lime glass can crack with sudden heat, because boiling water warms the inside faster than the outside. Iced drinks, juice and water are perfect.
